Working everyday for sometimes more than 10 hours for about 12 days in a row, which leaves very little time to collect my thoughts about things. This last weekend I spent relaxing and thinking about what my next blog post should be.

On Monday I was given my answer while watching the news. Apparently the organization, Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco wants to rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant by next year. This organization has already received over 8,000 signatures - over 1,000 more needed to put the measure on the November ballot.

Me and my roommate immediately started cracking up upon hearing this news. Yes the idea may be child like and outrageous, but I have to give this group props, the idea is very funny.

Most of us are frustrated and hate the Bush Administration by now and even have clocks ticking down to when he leaves office. My whole high school and college years have been spent with this man in office. In some ways its been hard as a young adult growing up in America to trust "mature" political leaders who are more "experienced" than me while I just watch the country fall apart. I just hope the next administration gives me hope that we can fix our problems and make the world a better place.

The more I thought about this plan to name a sewage plant after Bush, the more a I am against it. I don't think George Bush deserves to be memorialized on a sewage plant. George Bush is worse than poop in my opinion. Why should we name him for something that makes him look better? There are a lot worse things than sewage, like a oil war, global warming and car bombs.

If this proposal goes on the San Francisco Ballot, let's not vote to approve it and make George W. Bush look better than what he really is.

Before/After

Before

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208928332137444562" style="FLOAT: left; Also at my internship with the Giants, I have had the opportunity to produce more videos that have ended up on the scoreboard during games. So now I am constantly looking for new ways to create more engaging and exciting content through these media platforms.

If you are interested in video editing and want to learn some new programs to enhance your films, I would recommend Video Co-Pilot. This site gives you FREE tutorials about software programs like After Effects ranging from beginner lessons to learning how to create a frosty breath. The tutorials are very user friendly because you can stop and pause at any time, and view each tutorial multiple times.

For the most basic tutorial I would recommend the beginner lesson to After Effects. It gives you the basic steps to create motion effects and I use it as a good refresher in case I forget how to do something. Why should you use After Effects in case you were wondering? After Effects is a helpful program to create motion graphics and enhance your videos and also a good thing to put on your resume if you were interested in being involved in post-production work.

Also the tutorials are not that time consuming and each segment only takes about ten minutes each. The good thing about this site is that it breaks up each lesson into segments so you don't have to watch the whole tutorial all the way through. Oh yeah mentioned it was FREE right!

This website will help you gain basic knowledge of After Effects but you will still need to apply it to truly get the basics down. But overall I found this a good website to teach me the necessary tools so I had at least some clue how to use this program.

Time Blogging - Before/After

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE/AFTER SET

Digital Literacy

Looking back at my tag cloud I created from all my Davies Forum posts over the last semester, it's amazing that we have covered so many ideas and issues surrounding digital media. Instead of reflecting back on all of the digital media we have covered this semester, I found myself thinking about ways to use what I have learn this semester and apply it to my future.

After thinking about my Tag cloud and scanning it over a couple of times some of the words that stood out for me were: People, World, Community, Create. Before taking this class, I knew digital media has made it easier for the world to come together and be connected. The hard thing about that is creating digital media that allows this to take place in a participatory environment, where creators and users can give feedback to one another. One thing I will take from this class is the new strategies to connect with people. For example, it could be something simple like linking to another blog or leaving a comment. Even in this global world we live in, you still have to create or initiate the conversation so people will notice. One of the best quotes I heard all semester was from Ivan Chew: The easiest thing to do is leave a comment.

One thing that this class helps builds towards is creating or using new digital media that connects People to their Communities then the World. I have learned how digital media can be used as a powerful tool to rally a community together or to simply inform people about an exciting field trip. Learning to be digitally literate is hard because there are so many new programs that are created each day, but that provides us the opportunity to learn more about digital media and the ways it can help connect us.

I have realized that some how in my life I want to be able to connect people with each other, either locally or globally. Using the digital media that we have discussed in this class will help me come up with strategies to connect people around the world. But I also look forward to learning about the next twitter or tag cloud that will change the field of digital media. So here is a blog toast to the learning about new digital media and connecting people to their communities then to the world.

See what how much our class created this year by checking out this Link

And please visit these blogs:

Amber , Lis, Kelly, Sara, Steven, Lulu, and Silver

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197434123013281266" style="FLOAT: left; speaker of the semester, came to the University of San Francisco to talk about how comics can teach us about the world we live in.

After reading Scott McCloud's book, Understand Comics - The Invisible Art, Thurtle gave me an even more in depth look at comics. He also convinced me that it is better to do a speech with no shoes on.

McCloud and Thurtle have showed me that comics aren't just silly cartoons with imaginative hero's and villains. Characters like Swamp Thing can teach us things about our society and ourselves. Swamp Thing used to be a regular scientist trying to help save the world from environmental problems when his experiment goes south and turns into the Swamp Thing. The world didn't create Swamp thing, we did, and it is up to us to adapt to these changes in our environment instead of outcasting them into our society. I loved Thurtle's explanation when he stated to change the world we must first listen to it then make the necessary steps to fix it.

Thurtle also explained how superheros are products of industrial accidents and they remind our society that we have taken industrial society for granite. Living in am industrial and global society, superhero comics portray the world we live in today. Comics informs us about the world in ways newspapers and news media can't.

After reading McCloud's book, I forgot how much I enjoy reading a good comic book once and a while. I never got into comics as a kid, but I enjoy reading in between the "gutter" and visualizing the events in my head by creating the crime in my own style. I never realized comics could send such a strong message about our society and they way it functions.

Stonelake Farm

As I piled into Kelly's car at 5 a.m. , two things crossed my mind: What am I doing up this early in the morning? and how did Silver convince us to drive 6 hours to a farm out in the boonies?

However, after 6 hours, a 37 mile windy road and a 6 mile dirt road later, we arrived at a quiet and peaceful farm, with scenic views of the vast forest that surrounded us.

Stonelake Farm isn't your typical farm either. Yes it has its goats, chickens, and two adorable dogs, but is also environmentally conscious as well. Stonelake generates its energy with a system of solar panels that heats up water which provides electricity to the households. Not to mention it also uses the nearby creek to generate electricity as well. Every little detail has been meticulously planned out, even down to the hand made benches along the hillside to watch the sunset or to enjoy a delicious meal.

One of the masterminds behind this farm is Francis, and is one of the reasons why Stonelake Farm is so self-sufficient . Francis has been a outdoors man all his life and can prove it, by making a fire in a matter of minutes with his trusty bow and elk bone. I was amazed how quickly he could create fire and then hit he me how screwed I would be if I ever got lost in the forest. Francis still retains skills, like making fire or surviving in the wild, that my generation has lost. For centuries these skills were a necessity to survive, but now in today's society, fire can be started with a match and you can go get all the food you want two blocks down the street at a grocery store.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Silver Attempting to Chop Wood&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Sunny Skies

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
One of the things that struck me while I was at Stonelake was when Francis brought out the chainsaw to saw up some firewood. I remember him saying "Everybody clover your ears" before he fired up the chainsaw. As I braced myself for what I thought would be a excruciating loud noise, the sound came nothing to what I was expecting and was pretty bearable for my standards. But I realized for Francis, that was about the loudest noise he probably hears out on the farm, except for the machines the new neighbors pass by in. I also noticed Francis had earmuffs to block the sound of the chainsaw. I realized how much other distractions we have in the city and how we have become accustomed to adapting to these noises. I know I can read a book on the bus with multiple conversations going on around me, not to mention the street noise. Matter of fact it would be kind of weird to read in almost total silence and I would have to look around to see what is wrong.

I think Francis might have a hard time adjusting to city life now that he has lived in rural surroundings for so long. But on the other hand I would be totally lost if I had to live in on a farm and be able to survive for myself. I guess what I am wondering is it possible to adjust to a new lifestyle after a certain time living in a completely different one? All I know is I learned a lot from Francis and the lifestyle he chooses and I am glad he found a place where he can live the way he wants and be at peace with himself, which is what I think everyone is looking for at some point in their life.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Icy Waterfall at
Stonelake. With beautiful waterfalls and big rocks to climb on, I was glad I got to enjoy this place for what it is, instead of thinking about graduating and all of the tests upcoming in the next few weeks. I told myself before I went that I wasn't going to think about these things because I wanted to experience all the farm had to offer. I felt by thinking about all the stuff going on here, it would take away from my experience at the farm. I am thankful that Stonelake had such beautiful scenery and you could just enjoy being there. From waterfalls, to beautiful views, Stonelake is a great place to get away from it all. It also helps that you have 3 glorious meals a day and some drinks to pass the time and look forward too every 3 hours or so.

- - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Before &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspAfter

Kevin Epps

"Have your people 'Kiss my ASS'", read the T-Shirt that Kevin Epps wore to the Digital Literacy talk at USF last Thursday. Kevin's talk brought a new and fresh perspective to the Davies Forum by discussing the Digital Divide and ownership rights over digital content.

Kevin comes from Hunters Point, a district at the edge of San Francisco's city limits. Kevin has made a successful career of out of making digital media even though HP is ridden with drugs and gang violence. What I love about Kevin is he didn't run away from his roots and his communities problems, instead he embraced them and chose to make a film about life in Hunter's Point. In this film, "Straight Outta Hunter's Point", Kevin bravley goes out onto the streets of HP to interview local residents about the issues concerning this community. However, Kevin explains in his talk that this film needed to be done to raise the awareness of what is going on in HP to the rest of the residents in San Francisco. Kevin brings a voice to the community that can be spread around the City using digital media.

Kevin is also trying to let people know in his community about digital media and trying to raise funds to cut the digital divide. The digital divide is one topic that we have not discused in class but effects many people in low-income communities. Often these communities, like Hunters Point, loose their voice in the community because they have less outlets to voice their problems and concerns. Kevin is teaming up with Google, to get young producers to tell short stories about their communities. Kevin is hoping to get more young people involved in digital media in Hunters Point to give a bigger voice to this community. Let's hope their voice will get loud enough so that every resident in San Francsico knows all the major issues that have effected this community.

Library

What do I like most about the Gleeson Library at USF?

I would have to say the computers because it provides access to anyone who attends USF. I know most of us have computers, but I know I see a lot of international studies using them, maybe because they didn't bring a computer overseas. Or in my case, since my computer broke down and can't afford a new one, the Gleeson computers provide access and allow me to connect to all of you guys. (Yay!) Also the computers in Gleeson are nice because people who don't have lab tops, can have access to the Internet while there on campus to check e-mail or work on homework.

What Would I change about Gleeson Library?

1. Since were on the subject of computers, I'll make a recommendation that might improve the computers on the second floor of Gleeson library. If you don't know where this is, if you go up the stairs to the 2nd floor and walk all the way straight ahead you will notice a long line of computers. My idea would to build a small sound-proof room around each computer. That way people can't listen to music as loud as they can't or pound on the keyboard as hard as they want without disturbing other students.

2. Another Idea would be to have a section in the library where people could create a USF music library. Students could bring in their CD's and upload them to a computer where any student could listen to them. I guess you could also use IPOD's but that brings in the question of illegal downloading and that whole issue. But I think it would be cool to create a place or commons where students and faculty could share their music.

3. Also I don't know id Gleeson does this, but they could invite local writers or poets to come in and read some of their work and have a question and answer period after. Maybe they could block off the Atrium for a couple of hours and hold the event in there. I know there are tons of local writers and poets who probably enjoy coming to a college campus.

Kelly Quinn

Today the San Francisco skyline is changing rapidly. New High rise condos are popping up everywhere in the city because of the need for residential homes, because of the lack of space this city has. Particularly, the Soma district (South of Market) is the epicenter for all of these new condos. But what effect do these new condos effect or change the neighborhood?
It wasn't recently until I read Jane Jacobs book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" and listening to a talk by Kelly Quinn, an assistant professor of American studies at Miami University, that San Francisco is in a struggle right now to keep it's identity, while trying to provide a need to the public.
San Francisco is a city that also values public art, and many pieces can be seen all over the city. Also back in the 70's the people of San Francisco stopped the City from expanding the downtown sky rise into the residential neighborhoods. It is clear people need space for affordable housing, but at what price will neighborhood pay, if there are no social areas around these high risies where these people can interact?
Hopefully with the influx of people into the Soma district, it will attract more businesses to come into the area creating more social interactions on the streets. Also, the city should think about creating a park or some public space where all these residents can interact instead of being locked up in their high rise condos.
I think it will be interesting to see what becomes of the SOMA district in the next few years, especially with more high rise condos being constructed.

FMAtlas.com

Well, I don't know about you guys but I am not a fan of fmatlas. For one it's a bit slow, I know we have come to take download speeds for granite, but I ain't going to wait all day for the map to pop up. Sometimes for me the zoom tool wouldn't work and I would have to log off the site then log back on to get it to work properly again.
In addition, the site isn't that user friendly. I uploaded some pictures to the map which I took the time to describe and all that good stuff, then when I closed my browser and went back to check to see if my pictures uploaded to the map I discovered they did not. It also took me a while to figure out that you have to click on My Atlas to be able to save your pics on the map, otherwise it doesn't.

And besides you can only look at pictures you have posted on the map and not other people around the world. And I believe there is already a site that lets you do that its called FLICKR! Not only can you look up your pictures, you can look up your contacts pictures and pictures from anywhere around the world (And it's faster anyway).

What I am trying to say is fmatlas is not a good site, in my humble opinion, I am stickn' with flickr.

Fred Stutzman

Fred Stutzman, a grad student from North Carolina, has been studying the way people use Facebook to interact with friends, family and co-workers. During his talk to the Davies Forum at USF, I found many of his results to be true for myself.

For example, Fred data showed that most people used facebook to search for close friends or people we see everyday. This shows our conception of the audience is the people we come into close contact everyday. This rings true for me because I know I only update my profile and post pictures so my friends who hang out with me can see them. Even though I have about 150 friends on facebook, on only hang out with about 20%. For this reason I think it is harder to create and "alternative" personality on facebook rather than myspace because your close friends would know that is not your style. Besides I think one main reason students sign up with facebook is to be connected to other students so they can plan parties or send event invites which requires offline participation.

Eventually, I see my kids not using facebook or myspace because 1. There parents are on it and can see their profiles 2. They would want to find an exclusive "space" too socially interact away from their parents eye.

Delicious Meal

UPDATED 3/8/08

Ingredients:

1/4 cup olive oil & water
seasoning
Chicken (or any other meat)
Corn
peppers

1. Then again I guess Bryan does have the time to find all these cool new web 2.0 media sites since it's his job. Bryan is definiately an interesting character, I loved the fact that he spends all his time talking about wikis, blogs etc then goes outside his house in Vermont and chops wood, definiately an interesting mix.
One of my favorite websites that Bryan pointed out was Twitter. I liked the concept of only having 140 characters to write what what your thoughts, but is a good and quick way to let your friends stay connected to you. It was pretty cool to see the global map of comments people were making all across the world.
I found it interesting that teachers were reluctant to use web 2.0 technologies in the classroom. I guess there scared of losing their jobs or something but I belive learning how to blog and become digitaly literate is important for K- 12 students especially since they are growing up in this culture. I think it is great that young students are blogging because it is a form of writing that students are practicing even though they might not realize it. Even though it might not be the most intelectual topics, at least students are familiar with these web 2.0 technologies and will be at their disposal when they want to tackle more important issues.
I think web 2.0 technologies could be used to teach students about the whole world. It would be awesome if a class in california could create a blog about themselves then have an rss feed that links to another blog in europe or south America etc. Web 2.0 its all about being connected and passing along conversations, I know I would have liked to be in contact with a school from somewhere outside the US when I was in school.

Since i forgot my camera go to David's blog to see cool pics of Bryan

Brewster Kahle

There are an estimated 28 million books in the National Library of Congress, Brewster Kahle wants all of them to be availible online for everyone to read. It seems to all of us like a monumental project, and it is, but Kahle has already started scaned more than 350,000 books online. Hey its a start.
Kahle's idea is simple make universal education and universal access to all knowledge possible to everyone in the world. I Can't argue with that, however our government dosen't feel the same way. Thanks to in part copywrite laws which take away from the public domain and prevent Kahle's vision from totally coming true. He belives that digitizing our library and culture, such as music, art and audio would be "The greatest gift of our generation".
Kahle started the internet archive in the mid 90's and from then on has been consumed with this massive project. The internet archive not only archives books, but audio, music and moving images as well.
Kahle has also tried to spread universal knowledge through a program that makes books for free to people using a "Book Mobile", that has traveled all around the world. Kahle's site even has a way back machine that takes photos of every webpage every two months, check out what google looked like when it started web.archive.org/web/19981111184551/http://google.com/
I have to say Kahle has an amazing vision, but a worthwhile one as well. It would be awesome if someone who had internet access in Africa, but didn't have an adaquit library could log on and have access to millions of books.

Sorry link to Alegrias didn't work here it is http://www.yelp.com/biz/alegrias-san-francisco#hrid:vFZTnF4syYU9F-l2tV9GFQ

Alegrias- Tapas Bar

If any one is craveing some tapas and a warm cozy restaurant, this is the place to be. Right off Lombard st., it was a perfect place to go on a rainy & cold night. The place is not to big but has a good atmosphere inside. It isn't to quiet were you feel you have to whisper but also not loud so you don't have to shout across the table. I definiately had to try their Sangria which was decent but definiately helped me warm up from the cold outside.
My family and I each picked a tapa that we wanted then shared all of each others plates once the food arrived. I would recomend the Calimari, and Pork skewers. They also have a lot of vegetarian choices on the menu, which my sister liked since she is also a vegetarian. Tapas ranged from about 6-9 bucks but they are pretty good size and value for the price. We also shared an order of the Paella a la Marinera which is a traditional spanish dish that has rice with shrimp, oysters, peppers, fish, clams in basically a big pan all cooked together. This dish really reminded me of Spain since they use a lot of seafood in their traditional dishes. It dosen't compare to getting the real thing in Spain but it comes pretty close.
I could see this place being good to bring friends or a group along because you all get to share eachothers food and try a lot of things on the menu. And if your still hungry the waiters will still let you order more Tapas.
Overall the service was very friendly and definiately made the expearience better. It may be pricy for all of us students out there but worth it if you are going out to celebrate with friends or just wants some good spanish comida.

Lost in Library

need directions

will work for information

Donde estan mi clase?

Ivan Chew

On Thursday Feb. 14th a Librarian from Singapore came all the way to USF to talk about his expeariences with blogging. The self titled "Liblogarian" gave the audience some compelling reasons to start blogging or ways to make a blog better to read

Ivan Chew breaks the "sterotypes" of a librarian with his witty sense of humor and great story telling ability. I can't help but laugh everytime I think about the story about how he explains to his peers on why they should start a blog. "That's why" Ivan explained after he looked up a blog and popped up on the first page of google. For not doing many talks about his work he is a very engageing speaker.

I found that many of Chew's observations about blogging were useful to me starting my own blog like making the blog educational, personal, and entertaining. I liked his idea about blogs being publically engaging because I feel that is one of the most important things blogs can provide. If a blog can help or educate people on a topic it is awasome how people who have never met before can help each other out.

Finally, I thought Ivan's efforts to bring the gap between the younger and older generation was a very interesting product. I never thought about how senior citizens have expearienced so much in their lives but have been unable to record some of their expeariences. It's also cool to think that are blogs and photos online now will be availible for future generations to see.

And like Ivan says "The easiest thing to do is just make a comment"

To read Ivan's blog go to http://ramblinglibrarian.blogspot.com

MONSTER JAM!

Alright so a couple of weekends ago my friends and I decided to go to Monster truck show on SATURDAY, SATURDAY, SATURDAY! I figured when would I ever go to a monster truck show in my life so I thought it would be a good expearience and could check it off the life list.

Actually I was excited to see what type of audience this show would attract. For some reason I associated Monster trucks with people that live in the woods or something, because monster trucks are really that mainstream. To my surprise when we got there, was actually a line to get tickets and the Oakland stadium was sold out. As I looked around confused I notice that there were a bunch of kids all around me. Apparently I forgot what it was like to be a young boy already. The crowd was filled young kids who dragged their parents along too.

It was definiately different than what I expected. But later it all made sense because I remember playing with my toy trucks when I was a kid and creating "havoc" on my bedroom floor and doing all the cool sound effects.

Though I must say it was a fun event and only cost me $15. Plus the names are really cool to say like GRAVEDIGGER and BIG FOOT. I was glad reconnect with what it was like to be a kid because already I hate getting older and I am only 21 about to be 22.(which I know is still a kid to some people)

I guess what I learned from this expearince is try new things you never think you enjoy or would do. Drag your friends along at least then you can make fun of yourselves for being at some wierd event like MONSTER JAM!

Tambien no me gustaba matemáticas o sciencias. Algunos vezes, Yo he dado unas fiestas para otras personas y mis amigos. Era muy divertido por que iba a las fiestas y conciertos. For example, James Webb of Virginia hired 2 bloggers during the recent election to blog for his campaign. Also many other high profile polticians are already starting to hire big name bloggers for their presidential campaign. After looking at the data, I would still say that politicians can still be more interactive and post their own words on their blogs. It seems like the bloggers are doing the work for the politicians, instead of them speaking for themselves. My answer to this question would be for politicians to post on their blog every day or maybe answer a question that a person brings up on their blog. I don't think this process will take long since, politicians have busy schedules.

Update on 2nd question

As I was looking at groups today on youtube, i noticed under colleges USF was not listed. so i decided i might as well create one in the next couple of days since our school wasn't on there. Many of the articles like one by Matthew McMillan talk about how blogging needs to be more interavtive and include some politicians like James Webb of virginia who hired bloggers for his campaign. I also have a article that takes the other side by Perry Bacon who says despite the online blogging it is important for people to go out into the public and actually act out their opinions. I am also going to use the book Crashing the gate because it provides good information about the Dean campaign and ways to enact social change other than blogging.

2nd Question

For my read/write technology I want to use You Tube to upload my videos from my video production class. Since I have never uploaded a video on to YouTube I think it would be cool to show my videos to the world. One goal I have doing this is to try to get as many people possible to view my videos. The workshop by Veanne really helped because I knew I had to convert my files after reading the formats used on YouTubebut I wans't sure I how to do it. I plan on adding as many tags as possible and sending emails to all my friends and family. I was very interested in the tactics of the Dean campaign in 2004 using blogging to organize support for the campaign. Citizens were able to organize and raise funding for the Dean campaign. However, Gillmore talks about some of the problems with the Dean blogs, for example 1) It didn't draw policy assistence from the people, meaning the canidate didn't learn from the peoples ideas 2) The blog did not reflect Dean's ideas because he rarley posted on the blog.

For my question I wanted to ask: How can politicians use the web to intereact and gather ideas from citizens during their ploitcal campaings?

I belive in the 2008 election the web will be a key tool to organize people and to spread the message of the canidate. I want to look at ways to correct the problems that gillmore talks about, and make the politcians be more intereactive with the citizens.

2 quotes

"Much of the public activity of the Black Panthers was biult around highly dramatic stylized confrontations, often involving guns and the police" - p.42

"I want to outline here a three stage evolution of 'black power dramtics' from the dramatic speeches of Malcom X, to the plays of Amiri Baraka to the real life dramatic actions of the Black Panthers"- p.46

Black Panthers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Carlos-Smith.jpg

One story that I found interesting about the Black Panther Party came on a global scale and reached many more viewers than the protest on the capitol steps of Sacramento. IN 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in the symbol of Black Power at the awards ceremony in the 1968 summer Olympics in Mexico City. (Click on Link to view photo)
Smith and Carlos were both teamates at San Jose St and had a suggestion from their friend Harry Edwards to join together with other Black Athletes and boycott the games. Edwards formed the Olympic project for Human Rights (OPHR) which gained many support from black athletes but never materialized into an official boycott. Smith and Carlos though secretly planned a peaceful protest for the Olympics
Tommie Smith(Gold medal) and John Carlos (bronze) were about to hear the national anthem for the United States for the 200m dash. When the national anthem started to play both rasied their clenched fists symbolizing black power and bowed their heads.
Smith raised his right hand to represent black power in America and Carlos raised his left hand to represent black community and unity. Thier black scarf represented black pride and their black socks with no shoes represented black poverty in america.
After the protest the Olympic commity banned them from the olympic village and suspended them from the national team. Smith and Carlos even recieved death threats on themselves and their families. Also interesting story is the silver medalist in the race Peter Norman, of white color from austrialia participated in the protest by wearing a OPHR badge.
These actions of civil disobedience from these athletes were brave but more importantly sent a important message to hundreds of people around the world. It wasn't as tearifying as marching up to sacramento with guns but it still had the same message and intensity. This protest made the world confront the issues of African americans and sent a strong message to all that witnessned it.

Music

Music has become such a big part of our lives, right now and in the past. Music can be a symbol for a generation or a period of our history. Take the Vietnam War and all of the songs that one would acciociate with that period of unrest like Jimi Hendrix. We use music everyday to fill time or enjoy it to relax. Music has the power to inspire us by its lyrics or enable us to go crazy on the dancefloor and sing along with thousands of people. For my song I chose You Never Know by Dave Matthews Band.
The reason I picked this song because I love its message on how to live life and let it not pass you by. I really conected to the words of this song especailly the chorus which says "But Rushing around seems whats wrong with the world-Don't lose the dreams inside your head-They'll only be there til you're dead-Dream" I love this quote because I think it is saying don't give up your integrety and goals in life just to do what society and other people want you to do. I think it is also saying never give up on your dreams and you should persue them to at least say you tried. I think this is a good motto to live by because life goes by quickly and you should live life to its fullest.
Another line I like says"Don't let the troubles in your head-Steal to much time-You'll soon be dead-So Play". I like this line because life will piss you off many times but you can't dwell on the bad times but have fun and forget about your troubles.

I posted the Lyrics below

you never know By: Dave Matthews Band

Sitting still as stone watching - watching
People walking by you wondering why
No one ever stops to talk or thinks about it – if they ever did
What if God shuffled by?

One day we might see
Doing not a thing
Breathing just to breathe
We might find some reason

But rushing around seems what’s wrong with the world
Don’t lose the dreams inside your head
They’ll only be there til you’re dead
Dream

Lying on the roof counting
The stars that fill the sky I wonder if
Someone in the heavens looking back down on me –
I’ll never know

So much space to believe
Funny when you’re small
The moon follows the car
There’s no one but you see
Hey, the moon is chasing me

I worried if I looked away she’d be gone
Don’t lose the dreams inside your head
They’ll only be there til you’re dead
Dream

Walking through the wood
No cares in the world
The world has come to play
She’s all mine just for a day

There’s not a moment to lose in the game
Don’t let the troubles in your head
Steal too much time you’ll soon be dead
So play

All fall down
It won’t be so long now
Out of the darkness comes light like a flash
You think you can you think you can
Sometimes that is the problem
Dream little darling dream

Spinning on the wind
The leaf fell from the limb

But everyday should be a good day to die
Oh all fall downIt won’t be too long now
Every fire dies
I find it hard to explain how I got here
I think I can I think I can
Then again I will falter
Dream little darling dream

Spinning on the wind
The leaf fell from the limb

Welcome to my first blog.

This is kinda wierd. I was thinking when people made dictionaries in the past did they even see the long list of new words created by new technology. Is blogging even a word? I think blog is just a wierd word, how did someone make that one up. Maybe everyone should should just make up a word. Anyway i guess should talk about something other than blogging. So lets talk some football.........im mean soccer. If you knew me im a big soccer fan and follow english priemier league soccer religously. Liverpool is my favorite club and i plan on going there this winter to see them play. Some reasons why Liverpool FC is the best soccer club in the world 1. 5 times champions of europe 2. Stephen Gerrard 3. Best fans in the world 4. They never give up (down 3-0 at halftime in the 2005 champions league final only to come back and win it) 5. Best slogan and song "You will never walk alone"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOAU9Wr1IcQ&NR Check out this clip, and you will see why.
